Written by Norman Ball and Lonnie Glass to commemorate the 200th anniversary of RE Lee’s birth, this song imagines Lee’s thoughts at what certainly was the nadir of his career, the surrender at Appomattox. Prompted by a young officer, Lee offers a premonition about the next phase of his life, the presidency of Washington College, today’s Washington & Lee University. At least, that’s how I thunk it! –nb.

A fact: Jefferson Davis put on a dress and cloak and tried to avoid being captured by dressing like a woman,,,,I doubt it was the first time he dressed in womans clothing.
So the Declaration of Independence is wrong?
Taking the userID of Samuel Adamz and then making the comment you made shows just how ignorant you are of our history. Samuel Adams would have supported the Southern cause. The South fired on Union forces at Sumter who would not leave a state that had peacefully seceded from the Union.
To deny self-determination by calling it rebellion is to state that our Revolution against the Briitish was wrong. You ca n’t have it both ways.
Rebellion? We were leaving! “Rebellion” entails rogue troops marching on the capital.
Oh I see a bit like the Boston Tea Party!!
Lincoln mobilzed the north AFTER the South attacked at Fort Sumter. We couldnt leave an act of rebellion such as that go without punishment.
Part of the right to self-determination would include –it seems to me– the right to dissolve a union that becomes less perfect every day in order to form one that the people feel has a chance at being more perfect.
That should be Any people not Ant people. My typing sucks.
and make their own of so much of the territory as they inhabit.- ABRAHAM LINCOLN, January 12, 1848. Sure sounds to me that the WAR CRIMMINAL,Abe Lincoln, also believed in the right of secession.
“Ant people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing goverment, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable,a most sacred right-a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world.Nor is this rightconfined to casesin which the whole people of an existing goverment may choose to exercise it.Any portion of such people, that can,may revolutionize, and make their own ofso such people, that can,may revolutionize,
Hold your horses there a minute it was Lincoln who mobilised the army to invade the South.
Secession IS rebellion. But I can see that I’m not going to change your mind, nor you mine, so we shall have to simply agree to disagree.
You should learn to appreciate the difference between secession and rebellion. There is a HUGE difference. John Brown was a traitor. George Washington was a secessionist. The Washington snipers of 2003-5 were traitors. Lee was a secessionist, but by action alone. He was, in fact, quite a Union man. But as a soldier, he could not sit passively while invaders marched against his family and home. (To the true historian, this should sound like the situation of the colonials during Revolutionary War.
Lee had no “beef”, as you so eloquently put it, with the government. He was a military man of duty and principle. When war comes, how can a soldier do anything but fight? The choices were sweet and simple; attack your family, state, and home, or those who would destroy them.
“So was Washington. It’s an American tradition.”
So was Jonnie Walker Lindh. What’s your point, exactly?
Lee, rather than working out his beef with the government peaceably, he resorted to violence. That isn’t noble or heroic, it’s simply barbaric. This is a nation that follows the rule of laws, it’s will isn’t dictated by who’s willing to draw the sword first. As American’s we work together to solve our problems, not suceed when things don’t go our way. This nation is held together my our strength as a people. That someone was willing to tear that asunder deserves no honor, nor praise.
So was Washington. It’s an American tradition.
moron
silence782 Lee’s a traitor, plain and simple.

YOu are an idiot. Lee went with his State. At the time, the issue of a State leaving the Union was not decided. Lee also made many efforts to help heal the divide the nation. He ordered his men to lay down their arms instead of launching a guerilla campaign. He spoke about the need for everyone to get past the war and be good citizens. YOu were not there, but you are an idiot.
Lee’s a traitor, plain and simple.
Nice to see at least a few different pictures than the usual Brady fare. Although I must say I think it is a bit presumptuous to speak for a great mind like Lee’s, even if it is for your alma mater.
Terribly poignant and beautiful. The song is perfect and the images unbearably moving. As a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Louisiana Division, I thank you for this video. Ten stars.
so true
There’s more than one Lee University? Where is this one located?
Not South Carolina man..
